Karine Jean-Pierre (A Black Lesbian) Press Assistant To President Joe Biden

Karine Jean-Pierre is one of the few openly LGBT individuals to work in a high-level position in the United States government. She has served as the White House Deputy Press Secretary since January 2021, and her appointment has been praised by many in the LGBT community as a significant step forward for representation and diversity within the administration. 

Jean-Pierre was born in Martinique and grew up in Queens, New York. She attended Columbia University and began her career in politics as an organizer for John Edwards’ presidential campaign in 2004. She went on to work on a number of Democratic campaigns and eventually became the Chief Public Affairs Officer for the nonprofit organization MoveOn.org.

Throughout her career, Jean-Pierre has been an advocate for progressive policies and equality for all people, including the LGBT community. In 2011, she co-authored a book titled “Moving Forward,” which includes a chapter on LGBT rights and the fight for marriage equality. She has also been a frequent commentator on MSNBC, where she has spoken out on a number of social and political issues affecting the LGBT community. 

Jean-Pierre has been open about her own identity as a lesbian and has discussed the challenges she has faced as an LGBT person of color in politics. In a 2019 interview with The Advocate, she explained that “It’s about representation because if you can see it, you can be it.” 

Her appointment as Deputy Press Secretary has been celebrated by many in the LGBT community as a significant step forward for representation and diversity within the administration. Some have also expressed hope that her presence will help ensure that the voices and perspectives of LGBT people are heard and valued within the White House.
